Honolulu Marathon

I didn’t really train this year (i.e. no long runs at all), but I signed up for an entry in January when they had the really cheap bib numbers for us kama’aina. I decided to try to run 8 min miles for as long as I could. I decided to not start at the front this year, since I wasn’t going to run fast. Boy was that a mistake. The worst part was the gigantic group of Japanese students who stopped, 15 abreast, ten feet after the start line to take pictures of the fireworks. Then there were thousands of 6hr folks in the “2 to 3 hour” corral just dropping anchor for the first mile. After that though, it was fun despite the headwinds and driving rain. I’d rather have that than heat any day. On these out-and-back routes with a headwind, I always look forward to the turnaround, but then Wind Jesus always seems to turn off the wind right when I head back the other way. I felt good until about 22, and the push up diamond head was really painful. I ran a bit faster than last year off much less training, so I guess that’s a good thing.
