Bobby Jindal blows chunks.

EDIT: My favorite part was when he, the governor of LOUISIANA, mocked federal funding for scientific monitoring of potential natural disasters. He went out of his way do it too. He looks to be in the mold of the esteemed Governor Palin – reminds me of when she just couldn’t believe that the government spends money to study the genetics of fruit flies. Fruit flies? Why do we care about their genes – are we trying to make them designer pets or something? And my boy Bobby supported the teaching of intelligent design in Louisiana schools despite the vocal outrage of his former biology professors at Brown – that’d be really embarrassing for anybody but one of these new-wave astonishingly ignorant candidates for Future of the Republican Party.

Unfortunate failures are no fun. The summer before I got to grad school our balloon payload was cut free when the chase pilot thought the very-fancy instrument (giant magnet and all) was already on the ground. Actually, it was still a couple thousand feet in the air. It must have been a spectacular crash. The ~15 foot tall instrument was reduced to detritus when it impacted the rocky hard northern Manitoba ground. BTW that’s MY insulation that I spent three days attaching to the telescope.

Good weekend in Chico – snowshoeing and a good run in the pouring rain with dog. We got our Attack of the Volcanoes book and it’s totally awesome.

It’s been POURING here for several days. Roommate and I had reservations at the best campsite in Point Reyes, right on the ocean bluff. But we had to cancel due to “extreme inclement weather”: 40mph winds and rain probably would have swept us into the Pacific. Instead we saw Coraline in 3D which was extremely wonderful.

This morning I ran though Tilden Park and saw the overflow from Lake Anza turn the little trickle stream into a SWOOSHING TORRENT of watery violence. Really rad run except for all the mud. Apparently the mountain biker that passed me liked it because he exclaimed: “Yeah mud!”.

I have my 150-year-old Oregon Trail starter thriving and making me delicious sourdough bread, putting my Kensington 2009 starter to shame.

Lake Oswego 800 meter prodigy Elijah Greer to Oregon (boooooooo but not a surprise considering they just sent an 800m man to the Olympics). At the risk of furthering running stereotypes – you show me a white kid who goes 1:47.68 as a junior in high school, I’ll show you a kid that should run a 3:57 mile this year.
