Hawaii State HS track meet

We went to the Hawaii state championships on Saturday night — it was a fantastic track meet. The juggernaut Punahou girls (our President’s alma mater) were 5 points down to tiny Seabury Hall (upcountry Maui — Makawao, on the slopes of Haleakala) going into the 4×4. Punahou won the race going away, so Seabury needed 3rd to win. Coming into the stretch they were 7th, and all seemed lost. But! 30 meters from the line, another team’s anchor tripped and took out a couple teams, and the Seabury girl passed them all to finish… a too-close 4th. They only had 5 athletes in the meet, and one girl quadrupled 1500-800-3000-4×4. Lots of good races all around, and some very good marks — girls 1500 4:36.22 (68 first 400m), 13′ vault. Boys 800 was good too. In January we were doing a track workout at Punahou and some kid blasted a 600 in 1:23 by himself. On Saturday he won the 800 in 1:53.00 with very agressive 25/28/29/30 splits.
